A heartfelt tribute unfolded in Penzance as the Penzance & Newlyn Pilot Gig Club (PNPGC) unveiled a new gig boat dedicated to the memory of their inspirational founding member, Julie Saville.
The newly crafted vessel was officially blessed in a poignant ceremony attended by Rev Rebecca Fugill, RNLI Penlee Lifeboat coxswain Patch Harvey, and the Mayor of Penzance, Stephen Reynolds.
True to Cornish tradition and spirit, the boat was christened with a symbolic splash of Guinness – a fitting tribute to a woman known for her vibrant personality and unwavering community spirit.
Julie Saville was more than just a gig rower. She was a devoted professional who worked tirelessly to support people with special needs across the community.
In 2022, Julie co-founded the PNPGC with a clear mission: to make the sport of gig rowing accessible to all, regardless of age, gender, or ability.
Her sudden and untimely passing in 2024, following knee surgery, left a profound void across the gig rowing scene, Cornwall Council – where she was a respected colleague – and the broader community who had been touched by her dedication and warmth.
Determined to ensure Julie’s passion lives on, members of the PNPGC launched a fundraising initiative to commission a new gig boat in her honour. The result is ‘Myghternes an Morladron’, which translates from Cornish to ‘Queen of the Pirates’ – a name that captures Julie’s fierce spirit and leadership.
This new addition to the club’s fleet stands as a powerful symbol of inclusivity, community, and resilience – all values Julie championed throughout her life.
