A high-risk manhunt is underway in Scotland after a convicted killer escaped from HMP Castle Huntly, prompting a stark public safety warning from police.
Raymond McCourt, 59, was discovered missing from the open prison facility near Dundee on Tuesday evening. Police Scotland has urged the public to stay away from McCourt if spotted and to contact authorities immediately.
McCourt, who was serving a life sentence, has a violent past that continues to cast a long shadow.
Back in 1993, McCourt murdered shopkeeper Khalid Mahmood during a botched robbery at a newsagents. Moments after the fatal shooting, he opened fire again—this time wounding bystander Moira Rooney and PC Brian Williams, who was attempting to pursue him.
Prior to the deadly incident, McCourt also tried to rob a bakery, though the attempt was foiled by its owner.
Moira Rooney, a cleaner, and PC Williams were both later hailed as heroes by Strathclyde Police for their courage under fire.
McCourt was ultimately convicted of murder, attempted murder, assault, robbery, assault to severe injury, and multiple firearms offences.
Although released in 2015, McCourt was later sent back behind bars after stealing and selling valuables from his partner’s home. His return to prison further solidified concerns about his risk to the public.
Police have issued a detailed description in hopes of locating him quickly:
- Height: 6ft 2in
- Build: Stocky
- Appearance: Grey hair and beard, reduced mobility
- Last seen wearing: Long black trench coat, grey trousers, grey waistcoat, blue shirt, red and white tie, and brown shoes
A spokesperson for the Scottish Prison Service confirmed the situation: “I can confirm this individual is currently unlawfully at large and we are working with the Scottish Police to return him to police custody.”
HMP Castle Huntly, Scotland’s only open prison, typically houses inmates considered to require minimal supervision. Its primary role is to help prepare prisoners for reintegration into society.
Despite his limited mobility, officials warn McCourt remains dangerous. His escape has triggered a full-scale response involving multiple police units.
As the search intensifies, authorities are calling on the public to remain vigilant. McCourt’s violent history, combined with his escape from a supposedly low-risk facility, raises serious questions about the protocols at HMP Castle Huntly. Anyone with information is urged to contact Police Scotland without delay.
