Newry, Northern Ireland – Police have launched an urgent appeal for information following a harrowing armed robbery at a casino in the heart of Newry.
The incident unfolded around 10pm on Saturday, 27 April, at a premises located on Monaghan Street. Officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) responded swiftly to reports of a man brandishing a weapon inside the building.
According to Detective Sergeant Johnston, “At approximately 9.55pm, a man aged in his mid-20s entered a casino in the Monaghan Street area of the city, armed with a blade.”
He added, “He confronted a staff member with the blade and demanded money from her.” The suspect, after securing a quantity of cash, fled the scene on foot. Thankfully, no physical injuries were reported.
The staff member, though not harmed physically, was left deeply distressed. “Although unharmed, the staff member was left understandably shaken by what happened – this would have been a terrifying ordeal,” said Detective Sergeant Johnston.
Officers are now urging the public to come forward with any information that could assist their investigation.
“If you were in the area that night and noticed anything suspicious, we would ask that you call us on 101 quoting reference number 1596 27/04/25,” Johnston stated.
Police are also asking residents and businesses in the surrounding area to review their CCTV, dash-cam, or doorbell footage from the evening. “Your assistance is of great importance to us in our investigation.”
