Athlone, Ireland – Swedish tech titan Ericsson has announced a substantial €200 million investment into a major three-year research and development initiative at its long-standing facility in Co. Athlone.
The ambitious project, backed by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland, will focus on pushing the boundaries of open network management and automation, key pillars in the ongoing evolution of 5G technology worldwide.
This latest move will see Ericsson deepen its roots in the Irish tech landscape, with the Athlone site once again taking centre stage.
The company confirmed the objective of the initiative is to: “accelerate the development of open network management and automation capabilities used in 5G networks globally.”
It’s a forward-looking step that aligns tightly with global trends in mobile connectivity and digital infrastructure.
Minister for Enterprise, Peter Burke, hailed the investment as a “fantastic” development, both for the region and the country at large.
“Ericsson’s €200m announcement at their Athlone facility is fantastic news,” said Minister Burke. “Their innovative R&D project, which will span a duration of three years, will improve efficiency in 5G networks globally.”
With Ericsson having been a fixture in Athlone for over five decades, the new project is seen as a powerful endorsement of the site’s strategic importance.
“It is really encouraging that Ericsson have once again cemented Athlone as key base for the company, selecting the campus and the staff based here to lead this pioneering work,” he added. “I wish all the team in Ericsson the very best with this exciting new chapter.”
Michael Lohan, CEO of IDA Ireland, echoed those sentiments, pointing out the strategic alignment between the new project and Ireland’s broader innovation agenda.
“The investment strengthens the long-term legacy of Ericsson in Ireland, building on the success of past investments spanning more than 50 years,” he said.
“This RD&I project embodies cutting-edge innovation, exemplifies IDA’s continued commitment to balanced regional development. I wish Ericsson every success with this project and assure them of IDA Ireland’s continued partnership.”
Ericsson’s Denis Dullea, who heads up the Athlone site and its Network Management Engineering Unit, described the move as a significant milestone for the company and for Irish tech professionals.
“Our latest Irish investment is a testament to our commitment to Ireland and confidence in our exceptional talent here,” he said. “By delivering on this cutting-edge project, we’re both investing in Ireland’s future and empowering mobile operators worldwide.”
Ericsson’s €200m investment is more than a corporate announcement—it’s a clear signal that Ireland remains a pivotal player in the global tech space.
With strong backing from the government and IDA Ireland, the Athlone site is poised to play a leading role in shaping the next generation of 5G technologies. As the tech landscape rapidly evolves, Ireland continues to stand out as a hub for innovation, talent, and long-term investment.
