A serious collision involving multiple vehicles has led to the closure of a section of the M1 motorway in Bedfordshire this morning, causing significant disruption for drivers in the area.
Multiple Vehicles Involved in Major Crash
The northbound carriageway of the M1 has been shut between Junction 11 (Luton) and Junction 11a (Houghton Regis) following a collision shortly before 9am. According to traffic monitoring service Inrix, the incident involved two lorries, a van, and three cars.
All emergency services – including police, paramedics, and fire crews – rushed to the scene, alongside National Highways traffic officers who are managing the flow of vehicles and assisting those trapped within the affected stretch.
National Highways has urged drivers to allow for extra journey time and to follow diversion instructions as teams work to clear the scene.
In a statement, National Highways said: “Traffic which is caught within the closure will be turned around from the rear of the queue & directed off the motorway at J11. Please await instruction”.
Long queues have formed as a result of the closure, with tailbacks now stretching beyond Junction 10, which serves London Luton Airport. This is causing delays for airport-bound travellers and commuters alike.
Authorities have yet to confirm the number or severity of injuries, and both Bedfordshire Police and the East of England Ambulance Service have been approached for further comment.
Drivers are being advised to avoid the area if possible and to check travel updates regularly.
