To coincide with World Theatre Day, Vue Oxford is bringing a stellar lineup of British stage productions to the big screen this spring, offering theatre lovers the chance to enjoy acclaimed performances from the comfort of the cinema.
World Theatre Day, observed globally on 27 March, serves as the launchpad for a special series of screenings that celebrate the richness of British theatre.
Curtain Rises with Dr Strangelove Adaptation
Kicking off the season is the National Theatre’s world premiere adaptation of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove. This unique one-man show features the ever-versatile Steve Coogan, who impressively takes on four roles in the performance.
Set against the backdrop of Cold War tension, Dr Strangelove explores a high-stakes scenario in which a rogue US general sets off a chain of events that could lead to nuclear catastrophe. The production reimagines Kubrick’s cult classic for the stage, blending sharp political satire with theatrical flair.
Billy Elliot the Musical Dances onto Screens
Following closely is the beloved stage musical Billy Elliot, set to screen from 30 March. Captured live at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre, the musical tells the moving story of a young boy from a Northern mining town who defies expectations by pursuing his passion for ballet during the 1984–85 miners’ strike.
With music by Elton John and choreography that pulses with energy, Billy Elliot remains one of the most iconic British musicals of the 21st century.
Regal Rebellion in SIX the Musical Live!
On 6 April, Vue Oxford will present the cinematic debut of SIX the Musical Live! – a high-octane, pop-infused retelling of the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives. Each queen steps into the spotlight to reclaim her narrative in a production that has captivated audiences across the UK and beyond.
This screening marks the first time the hit musical will be shown in cinemas, offering fans a fresh way to experience its chart-topping soundtrack and empowering message.

Featuring David Tennant in the title role and Cush Jumbo as Lady Macbeth, this gripping take on the classic tragedy explores ambition, fate, and descent into darkness.
With its intimate staging and powerful performances, this adaptation brings new intensity to one of Shakespeare’s most enduring works.
